What Is the COT (Commitments of Traders) Report?
The COT report is a weekly report from the US CFTC showing the positions of different groups of traders in futures, such as gold and currencies.
Explained
It is usually released on Friday with data as of Tuesday of the same week. Traders watch large speculators’ net positions: are they leaning long or short, and how did that change from the week before. It reads positioning, not entry timing.
Example
Example with made-up numbersSpeculators’ net gold position went from 150,000 contracts long to 170,000, adding 20,000 contracts to their bullish bet in a week.
