What Is a Pip in Forex?
A pip is the unit used to measure price moves in forex: 0.0001 for most pairs and 0.01 for Japanese yen pairs.
Explained
Trade profit, loss and stop distance are all measured in pips. In a pair like EUR/USD a pip is the fourth decimal place, and many platforms show a fifth digit that is a tenth of a pip. A pip’s money value depends on the trade size: in pairs quoted in US dollars, one pip on one standard lot is worth 10 dollars.
Example
Example with made-up numbersYou buy EUR/USD at 1.1000 and close at 1.1020, a move of 20 pips. On one standard lot the profit is 20 × 10 = 200 dollars.
